Project Info

GDL Architecture were appointed in March 2017 to review and develop the concept design for the immigration area extension to the terminal.
The project included the extension of departure Gate 31 at the ground floor, and the extension of the immigration hall at first floor; to accommodate the UK Border Force offices, watch room and interview rooms, and remodelling of the customer queuing approach.

A key requirement for the project was for the design, M&E and structure to accommodate a future extension above the immigration hall at Level 2 for lounges serving outward bound passengers.

The terminal extension is located entirely within an airside location and specific operational constraints impacted on the design and construction stage planning. The terminal extension was completed in June 2018.

The challenge for the design team was understanding and working with the range of structures and materials within the existing building phases, and to tie in the new extension works with the older fabric to create a cohesive appearance for the improved facilities.
